Unit Converter

Overview

This application takes a value given in one form and converts it to it's equivalent in a different one, thus measurements in meters can be converted to feet, or weights in pounds to kilograms. The units are grouped into seven main categories; length, area, volume, velocity, mass, capacity and pressure.

Setting Up

First select the appropriate group from the drop-down "Conversion Type" box and then choose the type of units you wish to enter your value as well as the unit you would like the result in. In some of the groups there are unusual selections in the to and from drop-downs, such as yds-ft-in in the length conversion. These allow special multi part imperial values to be entered (see instructions below).

Entering a Value

Both the keys of the on-screen keypad and the keyboard can be used to enter a value. With the keyboard, use 0 to 9 and . to enter the value, the other operations being:

 Left Cursor  Delete
 Enter  Convert
 Escape  Clear
 @ key  Imperial Separator

Multi-part Imperial Values

Imagine being able to convert 3'9" directly to metres instead of first having to work it out as a decimal fraction (ie 3.75 feet) and using that? Or being able to find that 2.4m is 2yds 1' 10.5"?

Well, with this converter this is now possible by selecting one of the special imperial multi-part modes.

These are available for Length, Velocity and Mass conversions by choosing "yds-ft-in", "yds-ft-in/s" or "ton-lb-oz" and can be used for both input and output. The Imperial Separator key us used when entering a value in multi-part mode; for example entering a length of 13 yds 2'6" is performed with the following sequence:

13     2     6     -  Display shows 13y 2' 6"

There is no need for units to be correctly sized compared to the previous unit so, for example, 8'2" can be entered as:

0     8     2     -  Display shows 0y 8' 2"

Decimal amounts are also allowable but if used in the first or second position no further imperial units can be entered.
